The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) mourns the loss of one of its most esteemed leaders, Dr. Dexter Shurney. Known for his warmth, wisdom, and visionary leadership, he helped shape ACLM’s identity and inspired countless clinicians, scholars, and communities around the world.
As ACLM’s President from 2018–2020, Dr. Shurney championed payment reform, progressive policy, and strategic partnerships — always with health equity at the center. His leadership laid the foundation for the HEAL Initiative, which continues to advance equitable access to lifestyle medicine across underserved communities.
In recognition of his lasting impact, ACLM has named — in perpetuity — the Dr. Dexter Shurney HEAL Award, and helped found the HERO Dexter Shurney Fellowship, supporting the next generation of leaders committed to health equity.
Dr. Shurney’s contributions went beyond titles and credentials. As a founding member of the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine (ABLM), a respected physician leader across national organizations, and a devoted husband and father, he leaves a legacy built on compassion, integrity, and transformation.
His influence on the field of lifestyle medicine — and on the lives of those he touched — is immeasurable. We stand in solidarity with his family, friends, and all whose lives were changed by his work. He will be profoundly missed, but his legacy lives on in every life improved by lifestyle medicine, and every future clinician inspired by equity and compassion.
Dexter Shurney Obituary and funeral plans will be released by the family at a later date.
